Curious what a small, community-driven high school is really like? New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS) is a tuition-free public 9th-12th grade high school that empowers, enables and encourages students to their best future. Here are 10 reasons why attending NMSS is a great option:

1. Compassionate Care & Guidance

When we say that we’re here for you and we have an open door policy, we really mean it: we have NO doors in our office! We want you to know that you can drop by anytime and talk with us about anything: class, clubs, advice, new music, snacks or all of the above!

2. Teachers and Staff Who Love the Work We Do

Our certified teachers and engaged staff live for student growth alongside academic success. We all wear many hats: educator, counselor, impromptu dancing-in-the-hallway partners, and earnest advocates. Our small school enables us to share our creativity in our classrooms and on campus – and the trust we earn from students and families is our greatest reward.

3. Play Gardena High Sports

Many times attending a small school means there just aren’t enough students to field a sports team. NMSS is super fortunate because we have the opportunity to play all the big CIF sports through the Gardena Senior High School Athletics Program. Get ready to play (or cheer on):

  • football
  • tennis
  • volleyball
  • cross country
  • cheer
  • basketball
  • soccer
  • baseball
  • softball
  • track and field

4. Personalized Education

We really do know every student here- no one is just a number at our small public school. We give you a personalized education with individualized help just for you. We not only have strong academics, but we offer the support you need to succeed.

5. College & Career Prep

NMSS is no stress when it comes to planning your future. Our high school graduates meet California’s UC A-G requirements for college as a given. You have an advisor and a guidance counselor who know you and help you navigate your fabulous future options. We’ll help you with admission applications, financial aid, test prep and even bring colleges and career options to our campus so you can ask all the questions.

6. Community Service

At our tuition-free school, connecting to our local community is important to us. Our students rise to the challenges of organizing blood drives and canned food collection. We love seeing students learn as much as they give! All students graduate with at least 75 hours of community service credits because giving back matters.

7. Fun Times

We might provide strong academics with all-you-can-take support, but you know what else we’re really good at? Fun. Sure, we have fun clubs like Gaming, GSA, Music and Cooking (and yes, we do like to be taste testers) but we also host lip-sync battles, school-wide Turkey and Spring “Bowls” (think pie eating contests, dancing, and shout-outs), beach trips, and complimentary water dunkings.

8. Free College Tuition? Dual Enrollment with East LA Community College & Southwest College

Students at NMSS have access to curated, quality college instruction and deeper dives courtesy of dual enrollment with East LA Community College & Southwest College. What is dual enrollment? Our students get free college tuition through classes taught on our campus or online classes.

9. Field Trips & College Visits

Our small but mighty campus hosts classes and our open office of course, but it’s also where we showcase student art, bring in In-N-Out Burger, share our talents, park the Red Cross bus, and bring in college representatives so our students can visit different schools without leaving school. We also get out into the community, visiting local colleges and career schools (Universal Technical Institute (UTI) was a recent visit), professional sports games, and a week dedicated to senior fun because they’ve earned it!

10. Our Belief in You

When you enroll at NMSS, you’ll find a community of people who want you to succeed. We believe in the underlying character of each one of our students, and we are committed to giving you the tools they need to succeed – both today, inside the classroom, and tomorrow, as you take your next steps as leaders in the world.
