Here at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), we understand the value and power of belonging. It’s why we work so hard building community at our tuition-free 9th-12th grade high school in Gardena and why we love how small we are. We know everyone and everyone knows us. We know that having a community motivating you and lovingly calling you out and back is everything. We remind each other how far we’ve come and where we’re going.

Compassionate Care

Belonging is about feeling cared for and at our close-knit school, we work hard to support you. We’re here to remind you of your greatness, to help you get back on track, and to do your best.

At NMSS we feel passionately that our school is a safe place for our students to challenge themselves academically while they find themselves and connect with their fellow campus mates.

Due to our campus culture of compassion and collaboration, students develop into their best selves…while achieving academic excellence. When students feel safe and nurtured, they willingly invest in their own individualized learning journey. NMSS students learn in an academically rigorous environment that brings out their talents and personality. We feel this helps prepare students for the next day, let alone for college or future employment and a path to a fulfilling life.

Our teachers find ways to connect with students in and out of class. They model accountability and positive reinforcement, using social-emotional learning practices and our Positive Behavior and Support (PBIS) which is a team-based process for problem solving, planning, and evaluation.

Fun is definitely part of our compassionate care program. A great way to get involved and belong is through our Associated Student Body (ASB) organization…whether joining them or enjoying their hard work! They host yummy pop-ups, manage our student cafe, and organize spirit weeks.

We host “Bowls” like Turkey Bowl and Spring Bowl: think of them as fantastic field days to come together and laugh and play together. Seniors also get their own week of fun and the whole school gets to go to the beach (it’s coming up!).

Find like-minded people in our clubs like Gaming, GSA, Music, and Cooking. Our students play on Gardena sports teams or you can join us on the bleachers as our own passionate cheering squad! You belong here!

Supporting Accountability

Accountability is one of our values at our tuition-free Gardena high school and it complements a sense of belonging. We use accountability as a life skill that pushes us when we can’t see the strength within ourselves. It’s about trying again and staying committed. We call it “academic and personal integrity” where we practice:

  • Promoting mutual respect, appreciation, and acceptance among people of different backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and beliefs.
  • Accepting responsibility for one’s own behavior and actions.
  • Using appropriate models of communication when expressing ideas, collaborating, and resolving conflict.
  • Being responsible and productive citizens of the school, the community, and the world.
  • Communication is Key

Because we are a small, engaged community at NMSS, we have time to give every student individual attention. We connect in class, in the halls, and in our big open office where students are welcome, anytime. We also give public (Hello Instagram!) shout-outs in action, like being on time, turning quality work in on time, or asking for additional work and resources. In fact, we use Instagram and social media to connect as a school. We see you strong Warriors!
