9am and it still feels so early! Lucky for you, at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), a tuition-free public 9th-12th grade high school, our ASB team is busy working the Warrior Cafe where you can buy a little caffeine pick-me-up. Not only do you get to feel more awake, but ASB has just raised a little more money for a student in need, spirit week silliness, or a little teacher appreciation. What is ASB? Just an amazing group of NMSS students focused on fun!
What is ASB?
ASB stands for Associated Student Body, a student organization that serves as student government and planning committees. Students in ASB plan, organize, and participate in school activities, including fundraising events. ASB promotes school spirit and creates a positive school culture.
At our small school, ASB is a leadership class with around 20-25 students. While about half of these are seniors, there is a dedicated representative from each grade level. These representatives take ideas from students and report back to the class to discuss and see if they can make it happen.
ASB is also in charge of our festive spirit weeks that happen on the regular, like Back-to-School, Hispanic Heritage Month, Halloween, and February which includes Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and memes! During these weeks, ASB hosts events and “pop-ups” to raise money.
Putting the “Fun” in Fundraising
Our tight-knit community loves to have fun at NMSS and fun is pretty much synonymous with ASB! The class plans, markets, sets up and breaks down our events. Nothing is too big or too small, like our movie nights where our outdoor space is converted into an open-air theater with a big screen and comfortable seating.
The fun has a serious side to it too, as ASB usually has food and beverages for sale to raise money. These fundraising events support students who need financial help & staff appreciation week (we love you teachers!). For example, our candy fundraiser raised money for seniors who didn’t have the funds for graduation or other end of the year activities. We’ve got you!
Another cool thing that these events fund is the leadership and team-building conference at Disneyland. ASB attends the conference and afterward gets passes for the park. Could this be the coolest perk of joining ASB? Literally, that would be on-campus, at the Water Bowl, where being doused in cold water was all part of the fun. Or would it be the Shave Ice Day?
What do our ASB students put together? Let us count some of the fabulous ways:
- Warrior Cafe: open on school days and run by the students. Coffee and drinks plus treats.
- Valentine’s Day Movie Night Kickback: Students converted the cafe into a restaurant (complete with student servers) and catered food (including chocolate-covered strawberries!).
- Pizza Pop-up during Turkey Bowl, a day of group activities where grade levels compete against each other. Lots of balls thrown, boxing punches, and maybe even a haircut!
- Spring Bowl: students compete against the staff– maybe in a game of kickball, or stacking cups? Do people over the age of 20 even have hand-eye coordination?
- Fall Fest, featuring Chick-fil-A, karaoke, a conga line, and of course costumes!
- More food: Pasta Pop-up.
- Still hungry: Wing stop.
- What about sweet AND savory: Chicken and Waffles Pop-Up.
- Now for dessert, or just a break between exams: Ice Cream Bar!
- Beach Days: Giant beach ball battles, so much sand, and so much fun!
