Here at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), we make a big deal out of health and wellness. Not only is it good for your body, it’s good for your brain and we want your whole self to succeed at our small public charter school serving 9-12th grades.

Healthy Habits

Did you know that little things like getting up when your alarm goes off signals big rewards to your brain? At NMSS, we add little ways to our day to help our students thrive, like big smiles, big hugs, and big connections. If you’re feeling stressed we’ll see it and give you a high-five along with some encouragement. We’ll remind you that we’re Warrior Strong because we support one another.

At our tuition-free school, healthy relationships are a HUGE part of our high school experience. Likewise, setting healthy goals, like improving math scores by providing math support, go a long way in setting our students up for success.

Let’s Get Physical!

Moving our bodies is a great way to keep in good physical health and together, we champion all sorts of ways to move and groove. We have after school sports clubs to burn off restless energy and our students can play on Gardena High’s big CIF sports teams. We also host field days and fun play at NMSS like our recent Water Bowl where our heart rates were definitely raised throwing AND running away from water balloons!

Wellness Wednesdays

Our guidance counselor, Mrs. Sampson, leads a Wellness Wednesday program for our amazing charter school where she shares wisdom about health and wellness. She is often joined by our principal, Ms. Navarro, who provides (often humorous) support. Trying to check out a vegan restaurant which is unfortunately closed when they visit, Mrs. Sampson reroutes to find another one and sagely comments, “Sometimes you have to take a different route to get to the same place.” Mic drop.

Big on Breaks and Resources

At NMSS we want you to work hard but also work smart and that means building in time to pause and play. We require our students to take college credits so we can lead you through the process under our supportive guidance, but we also host breaks where we challenge you to lip sync battles. Or how about a beach break? We know our seniors are WORKED their final year of high school so we make sure to give them some restorative time during the year to give those brains a break!

We use our online platforms to pump our students up, and remind them of their strength. We also address serious issues and offer resources if you’re feeling down or lonely, or, for example, what to do if you’re a victim of cyber-bullying. We offer Care Solace, a service that provides anonymous help online. They address mental health and substance abuse and they are open to our entire community because our small close-knit public school is one big precious family.

At NMSS, we care deeply about our students’ health and wellness. Knowing each of our students means we can reach out and connect in whatever ways we are needed. We’re here to support you.
