We get it. Not everyone wakes up with a to-do list plan in their heads– sometimes just thinking about what you’re going to eat for breakfast is hard enough! That’s why New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), a tuition-free high school located in Gardena, California, is here to put the capital “P” in preparing you for your future.

1. College & Career Planning

At NMSS, we start thinking about after high school your first day of school. We set you up with a college planner so you know what you need to do each year of high school. Online, we have resources to check out, like how NMSS includes California’s A-G requirements so you have the credits you need to enroll in college, should that be your choice. Our counselor checks in with you and is always here to help you figure out your next step…or what ten steps ahead looks like. 

2. Our Teachers

Sure, our teachers prepare you by teaching classes you need to graduate, but that’s just the start. Teachers at our engaged school serve as individual advisors, not to mention cheerleaders, and maybe even your #1 Lip Sync Battle adversary (see below).

3. App Festsssss

How many pages is that application?! And how many applications should I fill out? Our free 9th-12th grade high school offers an “App Fest” a couple of times a year to help you fill out any and all applications for your future. Think college, art school, financial aid– you need to fill out applications to go.

4. Community Service

We give back big at our small public high school- it’s part of our graduation requirements. Get a group together and host our ThanksGIVEaway, give blood, or help out in our school office “Command Center”. You’re giving back to our school and community but even better, you’re trying out new roles and figuring out what you do and don’t like to do.

5. Sports Opportunities

Does preparing for your future involve sports? Come to our school for the personalized education and stay for the big Gardena High CIF sports teams you can play for when class is over. 

6. College on Campus

Part of our commitment to your future is bringing college to you so you can see what it’s all about (preparation for the win again!). By the time you graduate, you will earn at least one course credit (for free!) although you’re welcome to take more. Classes can be taken online or right here on campus- this past year we offered Introduction to Psychology. 

Speaking of college on campus, we have colleges visit us at our College & Career Fair so you can learn more about different programs offered.

7. Orientations

We want you prepared for school before it even starts. We host a new student orientation AND a returning student orientation so you know what to expect from Day One.

8. College & Career Visits

We go places at NMSS. In addition to visiting colleges in the area, this year we visited Universal Technical Institute (UTI) that offers career paths in Automotive, Diesel, Motorcycle, Motorsports, and Aviation Maintenance. Is there somewhere you want to visit? Let us know and let’s go!

9. Support

What does support have to do with prep? Think of it as an accountability piece. At NMSS we’re here to help you be on track. You have an advisor, teachers, admin, counselor, and even your fellow students here for advice, a high five, or, a healthy push in the right direction. 

10. FUN!!

Did you know that you are smarter when you are happier? That’s right, when you’re happy, you’re more open-minded, relaxed and confident. Build concentration and memory skills as you memorize song lyrics and dance moves in our Lip Sync Challenge. Take a field trip to the beach with your classmates. Gain strength as you chase our principal around to douse her with a bucket of water during our Water Bowl. Create a club you’re passionate about. It’s all in the name of preparing you for your fabulous future and it’s free.
