You wake up way too early to meet a friend to go work out.  You could never imagine doing this by yourself, not when it’s still dark and your bed is so soft and warm.  And yet, here you are, accepting responsibility and showing up, for your friend and most importantly for yourself, doing hard things together. That’s accountability.

Supporting Accountability

Here at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), we understand the power of accountability.  It’s why we work hard building community and why we love how small we are.  We know everyone and everyone knows us.  We know that having a community to motivate you and lovingly call you out and back is everything.  We remind each other how far we’ve come and where we’re going.  Accountability is a life skill that pushes us when we can’t see the strength within ourselves. It’s about trying again and staying committed.

Accountability is one of our values at our close-knit tuition-free Gardena high school. We call it “academic and personal integrity” where we practice:

  • Promoting mutual respect, appreciation, and acceptance among people of different backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and beliefs.
  • Accepting responsibility for one’s own behavior and actions.
  • Using appropriate models of communication when expressing ideas, collaborating, and resolving conflict.
  • Being responsible and productive citizens of the school, the community, and the world.

Compassionate Care

We know it’s hard work that helps you succeed at NMSS but we’re here to support you. Being accountable means owning up to mistakes and taking responsibility, but it’s also important to be patient with ourselves and others. We’re here to remind you of your greatness, to help you get back on track, and to do your best.

Our teachers model accountability and positive reinforcement, using social-emotional learning practices and our Positive Behavior and Support (PBIS) which is a team-based process for problem solving, planning, and evaluation.

Communication is Key

Because we are a small, close-knit community at NMSS, we have time to give every student individual attention. We connect in class, in the halls, and in our big open office where students are welcome anytime. We also give public (Hello Instagram!) shout-outs to accountability in action, like being on time, turning quality work in on time, asking for additional work and resources, and joining Learning Loss tutoring for Creative Writing. We see you strong Warriors!

We also include parents to help us with accountability. It’s not an accident that we have both students and parents sign our Parent-Student-Staff Compact (an exercise in accountability for sure)- we know that parents are powerful allies in helping our students take responsibility. Our public high school is small with a mighty community to support us.
