Parlez-vous francais? Habla Español? Nihongo ga hanasemasu ka? You can speak and learn these languages plus many more at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), a public high school in Gardena, California. We offer our foreign language classes in-person and online so you have many options at our small, engaged school serving 9-12th grades. The new school year just started and we’re still enrolling so you’re not too late!

California (Language) Love

To graduate from a California high school, you need a minimum one year of a foreign language. But why stop there? Foreign language is part of the “A-G” Entrance Requirement for entry into a California university: you need a minimum of two years (three years recommended) of the same language with a grade of “C” or higher. At NMSS, foreign language credits are required for both our General Diploma and our more advanced Millennium Scholar Diploma. Our Millennium Scholar Diploma is designed to push you beyond minimum expectations and to go above the average studies, and learning a foreign language is definitely that!

At our small, tuition-free public school we offer Spanish in-person and at different levels. Start as a beginner or continue learning in our advanced classes. So advanced you qualify for college credit? Great! NMSS requires college credit for graduation and if language is your passion, get those credits for free through us and our partners at East LA Community College and Los Angeles Southwest College.  Even if it’s perhaps less of a passion and more of a necessity (looking at you Bachelor of Arts!), you could take it now and get it out of the way (and don’t forget, it’s free!).

Want to take a language other than Spanish (or in addition to!)? At NMSS, we have online options so you have a wide range of options, including American Sign Language (ASL). And like taking Spanish at the college level, you can take classes for any language at the college level and fulfill your NMSS college credit requirement for free – a win-win-win!

How Do You Say, “We Support You!”?

Learning a new language can seem scary because you have to start knowing absolutely nothing and really concentrate to learn. While our encouraging NMSS staff and teachers are basically superheroes, they don’t know all the languages but they can offer superpower support as you work. Need a fist bump now that you can le/la/les all day? We got you. Want to give up because it’s impossible and you’ll never get it and even calculus must be easier than this? We’re here for you then too, helping you break it down, finding more resources, or just reminding you of how strong you are. We also have Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) tracking your academic progress on the regular so you can see how you’re doing overall, and, with the help of your advisor, tweak your schedule or set up some time-management goals that balance your studies. Remember: you’re an incredible Warrior in any language and we’re here to support you!

We’re just settling into our new schedules (including foreign languages) and it’s not too late to join us at our  tuition-free public high school.  Call us at 310-999-6162 and talk to one of our friendly staff, or fill out an application and join our Warrior team.  We can’t wait to meet you!
