Sure, at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), a tuition-free public 9th-12th grade high school, you get an engaged community who care deeply about you. But another great perk? Playing Gardena High sports as Warriors! Being a small school, we can’t offer the big CIF sports that larger schools can field, but we partner with the Gardena High Athletics program who generously let us play with them. Score!

Small School, Big Opportunities

Committing yourself to a dedicated sports team doesn’t mean that your grades will suffer at NMSS. Our small school is here to help you not only in the classroom but also with important life skills like time management and accountability. We work with you so you can play your sport(s) and get all A’s too! For example, Allison Horn plays on the Gardena girls volleyball team. She is also involved in student government. She’s a scholar athlete, gets good grades and meets with us to ensure she’s on the right path, which she certainly is!

Play Big CIF Sports

What sports can you play at NMSS? Here’s the breakdown:

This past school year, we had students representing NMSS in football, baseball, girls basketball, boys and girls tennis, girls volleyball, and track. NMSS students Shamia Overton & Saniya Keyes played on the Girls basketball team. They clinched the CIF Girls Basketball Championship victory and went to state. The team ended with an impressive 16-10 record.

Student Athlete Leadership in Action

New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS) student Daniel Serna stands on a baseball field holding a bat behind his head with two hands and wearing a white uniform.

You can just play a sport or you can own it like Warriors’ senior Daniel Serna does. Daniel plays baseball but he also serves as the team’s captain. He’s an inspiration and has been a player of the game multiple times. His biggest fans? His parents. Oh and speaking of inspiration, they knocked one out of the park at the last senior home game. His mom brought senior gifts, parent buttons, and other goodies. We love our students AND their families!

Running the Distance

At our small supportive high school, we want to cheer for you no matter the sport…and no matter if it’s through Gardena High or not!

It’s no secret that our principal Sam Navarro loves to run (check out this video of her day). She and other NMSS staff and teacher runners invite students to join them in races in the community. Recently, NMSS students ParkJose Mares, Jordan Lazon, Raymond Romero, and Gilberto Hurtado ran with NMSS art teacher Mr. Catbagan in the Griffith Park Run. It takes time and commitment to train and run in a race and we are so proud of their dedication!

You CAN fit it all in at our engaged school: from California’s UC A-G requirements, to free college credits offered here on campus, to our community service commitment, to big sports!  NMSS=win-win-win!
