At New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), a public high school serving grades 9-12, community is everything.  Parents and loving caregivers are our true partners in our success as a small, close-knit tuition-free school.  They are with us  – every step of the way –  as we shape and create bright futures with and for our amazing students. At NMSS, we are proud to include our students’ WHOLE community, whoever that is, because every valued connection promotes learning and growth.

Connecting our Community

We believe in community and connection, and family is a big part of that. Whether you give rides to school, act as your student’s #1 cheerleader, or ask the dreaded, “Got your homework done?”, these connections are important. All NMSS high school students have individualized learning plans (ILP) that we monitor regularly to ensure our students are meeting their personal academic goals. These ILP’s are used in conversations with caregivers to support students’ progress, too.

Parents and caregivers can also check-in with NMSS via our PowerSchool portal online. Found on our Parent Resources page, PowerSchool is a tool we use to personalize our students’ NMSS high school experience. It tracks not only details such as attendance, but class grades and assignments, too. We love sharing!

Students and parents connect as well through our NMSS Parent-Student-Staff Compact. The Compact sets clear guidelines for the group effort of caregivers, students, and NMSS staff. For example, NMSS agrees to provide a rigorous college prep education, parents agree to support this, and students agree to produce high quality work. Win-win-win!

Our open-door policy means that parents are welcome here…and welcome to join in the fun that makes our small Gardena NMSS high school community so strong and connected. Speaking of strong, join our students and staff cheering on our Warrior athletes playing on the Gardena High field- we want ALL the cheers for these big CIF LA sports teams!

Parents as Examples

We offer many ways for parents to get involved. Want to speak your mind at a Board of Directors meeting? Parents are welcome! Want to come on campus? Hang out with us in the office, we’d love your help! Ditto help at any of our special events or community service projects because we are all about engagement in our high school and we want you there. Want something on the regular? Greet students arriving or send them home with a hearty high five.

Seeing caregivers play a part at our small tuition-free public school makes a deep impression on students. Not only that, but volunteering demonstrates your care and commitment to your student’s education.

Can’t Spell “Partner” without “Parent”

Looking for tips to support your NMSS high school student? We believe that consistent parent participation leads to student success. Here are a few suggestions from our Student-Parent Handbook to help your student:

  • Ensure that your child arrives at school on time each day and supports the school policies such as discipline, safety, proper school attire, textbook care, etc.
  • If your child is struggling with their schoolwork or needs help, speak with your child’s Advisory Teacher and/or course teachers and ensure that your child attends Teacher Office Hours.
  • Encourage your child to be an active and responsible learner who completes and turns in assignments and homework when they are due and seeks assistance when needed.
  • Attend all scheduled parent/teacher conferences, school activities, and parent educational workshops.

NMSS Warriors succeed as a team, and parents and caregivers are absolutely essential to our achievements. After all, you can’t spell “partner” without “parent”.
