You can’t find your locker, recall the names of any of your teachers, remember where you eat lunch… so everyone MUST be laughing at you: are you having an anxiety dream or could this be…the first day of high school?! Don’t fret- at New Millennium Secondary School (NMSS), we offer a week-long orientation before school starts so these scenarios won’t happen to you!

Getting to Know You – And Each Other

Throughout our orientation week at NMSS, we get to know each other so you’ll start school knowing our teachers and other new students. We’re all about community at our small, close-knit public high school, so why not create one from the very get-go?

Our new students are divided up into two groups so connections are easy to make. We want you to make friends and know that you are not alone. Of course there will be silly games – we love to have fun at NMSS!

Higher Expectations

At NMSS, we know high school is a big change which is why we think it’s important to invite our new students early to campus before the first bell rings. We talk about how high school is the time to start prepping for your future: college and a career. We discuss tools we have at our tuition-free school to help, like a planning calendar of what you can be doing to stay on track and meet your study goals. We work on time-management skills because we know that setting up smart habits now sets you up for success in the long-term.

During orientation, we explain California’s A-G requirements, which are needed to be admitted to a California university and are a standard part of the NMSS academic core. We also share expectations for community service, free college credits taken at NMSS, and personalized learning in advisory groups. Part of our NMSS Mission Statement is to “make sure each student that graduates from our public school feels more than prepared to take on the challenges and responsibilities that will befall them in early adulthood”- we want you to succeed!

NMSS students sit outside eating lunch; two students pose for camera while two more in background are in a conversation with students outside the frame.

Make Yourself at Home

We want you to feel comfortable at our amazing little school where everyone cares about you. We know that it’s a lot easier to do your best if you’re not stressed and so we do everything we can to make sure you know what to expect as a Warrior.

We tour our campus and point out where you can find your classes, lunch, locker and of course our central office hub, home to administrators, counselors, staff, and volunteers. We show you where we play sports on Gardena High’s field and facilities and where we host our after-school clubs that you are encouraged to join. We walk though schedules – both literally and figuratively – giving you confidence to get around.

We’re so excited that you are here! As Principal Navarro says, our summer bridge week is like  “a big hug for incoming new students and freshman”. Welcome!
